When Susan Scofield moved from New York City to Downtown York, PA in 2006, she wasn’t so sure of her decision. Now, as a devoted downtown dweller, successful artist, proud small business owner, and concierge at the newly reopened Yorktowne Hotel, she is all in – enthusiastically encouraging others to embrace all that Downtown York has to offer. As residents of the Cottage Hill Neighborhood, Susan and her tortoise and parrot roommates are only feet away from the York Heritage Rail Trail, Little Jimmy’s Park, the Cottage Hill Community Garden, and several helpful neighbors who are always “willing to lend a cup of sugar.” S he can often be found walking to some of her favorite downtown locales — Appell Center for a show, 1st Capital Dispensing Company for live music, Gather 256 for a coffee with friends, and Revival Social Club for a happy hour cocktail.
“I’ve never experienced a community that is as open and welcoming for artists and creatives than Downtown York.”
As an artist and owner of HIVE Artspace in the Royal Square District, she is one of Downtown York’s biggest cheerleaders of the local arts scene. Shortly after moving to York, a new friend from a downtown gallery encouraged her to get back into her art; which she let go by the wayside in the midst of New York City’s competitive arts world and a busy work life. From there, she began exhibiting and selling her art at HIVE Artspace in 2013 and took over as owner in 2015. In those days, the Royal Square District was a neighborhood in transition. Now, thanks to dedicated people like Susan, the district is filled with art galleries, studios, rotating exhibits, live music, and more. As she explains, “I’ve never experienced a community that is as open and welcoming for artists and creatives than Downtown York.”
When the Yorktowne Hotel reopened its doors earlier this year after 6.5 years of major restoration and redevelopment, guests were greeted by the Hotel’s newly appointed concierge, Susan. One of her greatest joys in this new role is introducing hotel guests to all of the amazing restaurants, retailers, art galleries, and amenities found throughout Downtown York. Hearing Susan Scofield share about all of the things she loves about Historically Edgy Downtown York is an inspiring and refreshing experience. As she explains, “I’ve drunk the Kool-Aid and I’m all in.”
